You’re just getting started, and we’re sure you have questions. Here are answers to the ones we hear most, along with helpful links to get you on the road.

California uses a provisional (graduated) licensing process for new drivers under 18. Here is the path:

  • Be at least 15 and a half years old to apply for your instruction permit.
  • Complete a 30-hour driver education course.
  • Pass the permit knowledge test.
  • Complete 6 hours of professional behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school and receive your certificate of completion.
  • Complete 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night.
  • Hold your permit for at least 6 months.
  • Take and pass the DMV drive test. The minimum age for a provisional license is 16.

Adults 18 and older follow a shorter path. Driver education is not required, but practice makes all the difference.

  • Apply for your instruction permit at the DMV and pass the knowledge test.
  • Practice with a licensed driver, or book professional lessons to build confidence quickly.
  • When you are ready, schedule and pass your DMV drive test.

California drive tests are given by appointment at your local DMV field office, not at the driving school, so we focus on getting you ready for it. Our instructors coach you through the exact maneuvers the examiner scores and can add a pre-test prep lesson. For scheduling, what to bring, and what to expect, see our Testing page.

Please give us at least 48 hours notice to cancel or reschedule a behind-the-wheel appointment, by phone or text. Late cancellations and no-shows may be subject to a fee. Text is often the fastest way to reach us, since our instructors are out on lessons throughout the day.

Yes. We have both male and female instructors, and you are welcome to request a preference. We also offer lessons seven days a week, including mornings, afternoons, and evenings, to fit your schedule.
